British Sovereign Gold Coins were first minted in the United Kingdom from 1817 to 1917, 1925, and from 1957 to the present all struck in solid 22 Carat Gold or 91.67% Gold and are checked for size and weight during the annual Trial of the Pyx. Most modern day Sovereigns have the infamous design of St George Slaying the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci apart from a few special years in 1989, 2002, 2005, 2012 and 2017, 2022 and 2025. The British Sovereign Gold Coins are minted in five denominations: £5 Five Pound Sovereign, £2 Two Pound Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign, Half Sovereign, Quarter Sovereign Coin and in 2018 a Double Thickness Piedfort Sovereign Coin struck in Gold Proof or Gold Bullion Quality. |
