In July 1987, the Royal Mint was authorised by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II to issue new United Kingdom Britannia Gold Coins all struck in solid 22 Carat Gold and from 2013 struck in fine 999.9 Gold. Named after the symbolic figure of Britannia, who graces the reverse design, the coins are now available in nine denominations: £1,000 One Thousand Pound Coin, £500 Five Hundred Pound Coin, £200 Two Hundred Pound Coin which was first released in 2019, £100 One Hundred Pound Coin, £50 Fifty Pound Coin, £25 Twenty Five Pound Coin, £10 Ten Pound Coin, £1 One Pound Coin and 50p Fifty Pence Coin. The largest of these coins contains 1 Kilo of fine gold, with the lower denominations containing 5 ounces, 2 ounces, 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/20 ounce and 1/40 ounce of fine gold respectively. |
