2013 Struck on the Day Queens Coronation £2 Double Sovereign Gold Coin PCGS MS69 - Mintage 124
In 2013 to celebrate the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Mint released a very special Limited Issue Brilliant Uncirculated Struck on the Day St George and the Dragon £2 Two Pound Gold Double Sovereign Coin struck in solid 22 Carat Gold Certified Slabbed and Graded by PCGS as MS69.
The modern £2 Two Pound Double Sovereign was authorised by the Mint Indenture of 1817.
It was to be twice the weight of the Sovereign and was intended to replace the two guinea piece. But, like the two guineas, Double Sovereigns were not struck in large numbers for circulation, though special Proof issues have occasionally been made for collectors.
The reverse of the 2013 Double Sovereign depicts Benedetto Pistrucci's classic portrayal of St George and the Dragon.
The historic design first appeared on the George III Sovereign of 1817 and is now acclaimed throughout the world as a masterpiece of numismatic art.
The obverse bears Ian Rank Broadley's elegant portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, approved for use on the United Kingdom's Coinage from 1998 onwards.
Coin was only available from the Struck on the Day Coronation Sovereign 3 Coin Set.
