In 2004 to celebrate the Caracal, the South African Mint released a special Limited Issue Natura Caracal 50 Fifty Rand Gold Proof Coin struck in solid fine 999.9 Gold weighing one half of an ounce of pure Gold and is part of the Wild Cats of Africa series.
The Caracal is also known as African Lynx or Desert Lynx. Its name "Caracal" is derived from the Turkish word "Karakulak" meaning "Black Ear". The black ears, topped with long black tufts and the uniformly tawny-brown to brick-red coloured coat allows the Caracal to blend in perfectly with its desert environment.
A Caracal with a guineafowl catch is featured on the reverse and the concept repeated on the obverse.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
