In 2004, the Royal Mint Advisory Committee invited people to enter a competition to design a series of four £1 One Pound Gold Proof Coins struck in solid 22 Carat Gold.
Timothy Noad submitted drawings using heraldic beasts to represent each of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom.
Although his series was not selected, the Advisory Committee felt that the Heraldic Beasts were very strong and the Mint decided to make them available as pattern pieces.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
