In 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Golden Jubilee Gold Proof Sovereign 3 Coin Set struck in solid 22 Carat and includes the £2 Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign, Half Sovereign.
For one year only, the second time in the Queen's reign, all four coins in the Sovereign family will bear a special reverse design.
For numismatists, the new design will recall the beautiful and popular 'Young Head' Sovereigns of Queen Victoria, where a crowned shield of the Royal Arms featured on sovereigns struck until her Golden Jubilee in 1887.
In that year Pistrucci's St George was approved for the reverses of Queen Victoria's Jubilee Sovereigns, Double Sovereigns and £5 Pieces and has ever since dominated the gold coinage.
It is perhaps appropriate, therefore, that for the Queen's Golden Jubilee, Pistrucci's classic is, in turn, relinquishing its place in favour of the famous and very elegant shield of the Royal Arms.
The obverse of all the Coins is the stunning portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley.
These legal tender coins have been struck to the highest Proof Quality using specially selected blanks and highly polished dies.
