In 2002 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the death of the Duke of Wellington, the Royal Mint on behalf of Alderney released a very Limited Issue £5 Five Pound Silver Proof Coin struck in solid .925 Sterling and partly colourised by the Royal Mint.
The reverse of the coin shows the Duke of Wellington in his later years. In the background is Walmer Castle which was his favourite residence while the obverse features the stunning portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
