In 1998, the Royal Mint in conjunction with the Bank of England released a very special Limited Issue £5 Five Pound Banknote and Prince Charles £5 Five Pound Coin Set to commemorate the 50th Birthday of Prince Charles of Wales.
The Uncirculated £5 Five Pound Banknote is of the current series in issue and shows the cypher PW50 and a serial number between 1 and 1,000. The Bank of England have issued this cypher in honour of this very special occasion. PW50 will not be produced for general circulation and therefore these are the only notes to have this cypher. The new £5 Five Pound Crown of 1998 celebrates the fiftieth Birthday of the Prince of Wales.
The reverse is designed by Michael Noakes and features a portrait of the Prince of Wales with key words relating to the work of The Trust in the background. Gracing the obverse of the fiftieth Birthday Crown is the new effigy of Her Majesty, The Queen by sculptor and medallist Ian Rank Broadley.
A maximum of 1,000 sets will be issued.
