In 1995 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Channel Islands, the Royal Mint released a Limited Issue Liberation Piedfort £2 Two Pound Silver Proof 2 Coin Set on behalf of Jersey and Guernsey.
The reverse of the Jersey coin, modelled by Royal Mint engraver Robert Elderton, depicts a dove in flight, carrying an olive branch as a symbol of freedom and peace above the letter 'V' for Victory. Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks.
As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces.
In Britain the practise of striking piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known.
