In 1990 the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Decimal Proof 8 Coin collection of the present coinage of the United Kingdom.
1990 will mark the issue of a new, smaller 5p Five Pence Coin to replace the existing coin of that denomination.
This continues the process of change for the coinage that began with decimalisation almost twenty years ago. At that time the size of the pre-decimal shillings and florins was retained for the five and ten pence coins.
The 1990 5p Five Pence marks the first change in the size and weight of the shilling for over 150 years.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
