In 1986 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Great Gold Rush, the South African Mint released for the first time ever a very Limited Issue Protea Gold Proof Coin struck in solid 22 Carat Gold weighing one tenth of an ounce of pure Gold.
The reverse has a miner panning for gold from a stream in the foreground. Mine headgear, sheds, mine dump with a silhouette of modern Johannesburg in the background.
The obverse has the image of the King Protea or King Sugar Bush the national flower of South Africa.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
