In 1999 the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Sovereign Gold Proof 3 Coin Set struck in solid 22 Carat Gold and includes the £2 Two Pound Double Sovereign, Full Sovereign, Half Sovereign.
Whilst the Full Sovereign and Half Sovereign remain unchanged and continue to feature Pistrucci's St George and The Dragon, the 1999 £2 Two Pound Double Sovereign Coin carries a new design to commemorate the Rugby World Cup.
The Sovereign, first issued as a coin of the Realm in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII, was created to convey the majesty and dignity of the English throne.
It continued to be struck by each of the Tudor monarchs, but shortly after the Stuart succession, James I brought the issue to an end. Its re-appearance in 1817 brought with it a shift from traditional heraldic reverse to the classic beauty of St George Slaying The Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci
The design was replaced in 1825 but revived in 1871 by an enlightened Deputy Master determined to improve the current state of numismatic art and was extended to the Half Sovereign before the end of the century. It's great popularity has been borne out by the fact that it has appeared on nearly every sovereign and half sovereign ever since, including those from 1999.
Pistrucci's St George has relinquished its accustomed place on the Gold Proof Two-pound coin, however, to allow for a special reverse design celebrating the Rugby World Cup 1999.
Featuring a packed rugby stadium viewed from above, it has been created by medallist Ron Dutton who, in his own words, has attempted to capture the 'pulsating atmosphere, movement, sound and colour' of a great game and its enthusiastic spectators with the words RUGBY WORLD CUP 1999 on the edge inscription.
Like its circulating counterpart, the Gold Proof Two Pounds is a bi-colour coin, the bright yellow gold of the inner disc contrasting beautifully with the warm red gold of the outer circle.
The obverse of all the coins is a stunning portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley.
These legal tender coins have been struck to the highest Proof Quality using specially selected blanks and highly polished dies.
