In 1997 to celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of The Queen and Prince Philip, the Royal Mint in conjunction with the Bank of England released a very Limited £5 Five Pound Gold Proof Coin struck in solid 22 Carat Gold and a £50 Fifty Pound Banknote which features the special Cypher EP50 and the serial number between 000001 and 000150. EP and will not be produced for general circulation and therefore these are the only notes to have this cypher.
The reverse of the £5 Five Pound Gold Proof Coin is designed by Leslie Durbin and combines the Royal Arms and the Royal Crown beneath them is an anchor, representing the Prince's naval career.
The obverse depicts a portrait of the royal couple designed by Philip Nathan.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
