In 1991 the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue St George and the Dragon £2 Two Pound Gold Proof Double Sovereign Coin struck in solid 22 Carat Gold Certified Slabbed and Graded by PCGS as PR69 DCAM.
It was to be twice the weight of the Sovereign and was intended to replace the two guinea piece. But, like the two guineas, Double Sovereigns were not struck in large numbers for circulation, though special Proof issues have occasionally been made for collectors.
The reverse of the 1991 Gold Proof Double Sovereign Coin depicts Benedetto Pistrucci's classic portrayal of St George and the Dragon.
The historic design first appeared on the George III Sovereign of 1817 and is now acclaimed throughout the world as a masterpiece of numismatic art.
The obverse bears the elegant portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
