In 1989 the Royal Mint released a very Limited Issue Welsh Dragon Gold Sovereign Coin Medal which was struck in solid Welsh Gold.
The reverse depicts the Welsh Maiden which is a registered mark of authenticity for Gold produced from Gwynfynydd mine and has become synonymous with Welsh Gold.
Also on the reverse combines several emblems of Welsh heritage including a harp, a daffodil, a dragon shield and branches of oak and laurel.
The obverse features the Welsh Dragon, a Heraldic symbol of Wales.
Around the Dragon are the words 'Aur Cymru' and in English 'Welsh Gold' along with the weight and year of production.
The coin contains Welsh Gold mined at Gwynfynydd in the Mountains of Wales and struck by the Royal Mint.
Gold has been produced in Welsh Mines since 1850.
However its relative rarity has made pieces containing Welsh Gold collectors items and added value to jewellery.
Traditionally Gold produced in Wales has supplied Rings and other Royal items. Some examples are the wedding Rings used by Prince Charles, Princess Diana, the Queen Mother and more recently Kate and William.
