In 1999 - 2000 to celebrate the Millennium, the Royal Mint is issuing an exclusive Two Coin £1 One Pound Silver Matte Proof Coin Set containing the 1999 and 2000 dated versions of the United Kingdom's premier coin.
Chosen to reflect this historic milestone and to ensure that this set stands as a testament to the moment when 1999 meets 2000, both coins were struck at the Royal Mint at designated times - the £1 One Pound Coin dated 1999 being the last coin to be struck in 1999 and the 2000 dated £1 One Pound Coin the first to be struck in the new Millennium.
To endorse their unique character, the polished field and frosted image normally associated with Royal Mint Proof Coins has been reserved.
Based on the series of £1 One Pound Silver Coin reverse designs that honor the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom, this particular combination of coins sees the twinning of two exceptionally powerful interpretations - the magnificence of the Scottish Lion Rampant and the strength, fire and spirit of the Welsh Dragon. Both designs have been modeled by Norman Sillman from drawings by the College of Arms.
Gracing the obverse of each coin is the regal portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank Broadley.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
