In 2011 to celebrate Laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Royal Norwegian Mint on behalf of South Africa released a very special Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Gold Proof Medal struck in solid fine .99999 Gold weighing one-tenth of an ounce of pure Gold.
The reverse designed by British artist Danuta Haremska depicts a portrait of Nelson Mandela Nobel Peace Prize Winner from 1993 while the obverse designed by Avril Vaughan depicts Robben Island. These medals have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
