In 2002 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Mint released a very special Limited Issue Golden Jubilee Gold Full Sovereign 2 Coin Set both struck in solid 22 Carat Gold.
As a powerful symbol of the British Monarchy, the Royal Arms have provided majestic designs for the coinage of almost every monarch since medieval times. But of all these designs, few can be more familiar than that which graced the reverse of the first Sovereigns of Queen Victoria.
These Sovereigns bore a Crowned Shield of the Royal Arms within a wreath and were struck in their millions until the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 1887.
It is fitting therefore that in celebration of another Golden Jubilee a Shield Sovereign of Queen Victoria should sit side by side with a Shield Sovereign of the present Queen in this splendid celebratory set.
