In 2009 to celebrate Isle of ManGold Angel Coins, the Pobjoy Mint released a very Limited Issue Piedfort High Relief Angel Gold Proof Coin struck in solid .999 Gold weighing one-fifth of an ounce of pure Gold.
The reverse with a new design which was used a quarter of a century ago depicts Archangel Michael with feathered wings vanquishing a dragon.
Surrounding the image is a Celtic band with the familiar Isle of Man Manx logo in the top centre.
The obverse is the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
